Asbestos is confirmed carcinogenic hazardous material and is regulated under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, ONTARIO REGULATION 278/05, Designated Substance — asbestos on construction projects and in buildings and repair operations and Ontario Regulation 490/09.
As outlined in Ontario Reg. 278/05, if the laboratory analysis determines presence of 0.5% or more asbestos by dry weight in a bulk sample, it is not necessary to analyse other bulk samples obtained from the same area of homogenous material and the entire material is considered asbestos-containing.
Asbestos has been used in about 3000 building materials products and was banned since 1985. Asbestos exists in the older buildings and as per Ontario Regulation 278/05 the owners of the commercial buildings are required to prepare an inventory of the asbestos-containing materials and manage it so that it shall not air born.
